With reference to paragraph 2 of Colonial Office letter of 15th April No.7172/96, and subsequent correspondence on the subject of the proposed acquisition of Mr. Sharp's property required for the extension of the Dockyard at Hong Kong, I am commanded by the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit to you for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the accompanying copy of a letter dated 2nd October 1896 from the Treasury sanctioning the compulsory acquisition of this property, through the Colonial Government, at an estimated cost of $300,000 chargeable to the Naval Works Loan, and I am to request that steps may be taken for the early acquisition of the property in question.
